google.de stolen for 12 hours

It isn't clear how, but somebody registered google.de and German surfers who tried to visit Google's site saw a page hosted by a tiny German online provider, Goneo.

Usually the only way this can happen is the domain name expires and someone else buys it. How Google could let a domain name expire is anyone's guess, but it happened to eBay once.
