Church of Google

The Church of Google have compiled a list of "nine proofs which we believe definitively prove Google's title as God". This isn't as daft as it sounds - Oprah could start her own church and instantly have a congregation of 10s of millions. They even have a very active members forum.

Google Print open for business

This is great news for anyone already using AdWords that wish to venture into print advertising. The news of this, published at the Inside Adwords blog, had an interesting statistic:
Even with the growth of online news sites, newspapers are still a leading source of information for Americans. In fact, over the course of a typical week, nearly 3 out of 4 adults (115 million) in the top 50 markets read a copy of a daily or Sunday newspaper (Scarborough Research USA, Release 2, 2006)
That's right, to help promote Google Print, Google have used a statistic from 1 year ago, but if it has come from the same set of data as this one (Scarborough Research USA, Release 2, 2006), the data is actually from late 2004 to late 2005, meaning that on average the statistic is 2.5 years old - an eternity in internet time.

My question is, why did they not use a more recent version of the same statistics - Scarborough Research Publishes Newspaper Audience Ratings Report - April 24, 2007?

Google Sky

"With about a hundred million stars and two hundred million galaxies, Sky in Google Earth lets you explore the heavens like never before."

Should really be called Google Sky. Or at least "Sky from Google Earth". It's a downloadable product.

Google Answers now in China

Wenda (wen da meaning “ask and answer” in Chinese) is the latest "Google Answers 2.0", and is in China, in cooperation with Tianya.cn, a popular net forum in China. It is using the same framework that Google already launched a free Russian Q&A site recently.

Google Health Due to Launch

This will be huge, and I predict GOOG shares will rise $50 within a week of the launch of Google Health. At the same time expect lots of people complaining about privacy and security of data...

* Organize your medical information
* Track your medications
* Search up conditions and symptoms (with auto-suggest to help you out)
* Find pharmacy records
* Find doctors
* Track your allergies
* Track your surgeries and procedures
* Track medical tests
* Track immunizations
* Create a profile with your age, sex, height, ethnicity, blood type, weight, smoking and drinking habits
* Enter your family history of diseases and conditions
* Enter your doctors and other medical contacts

I can see that one day, you go to a new doctor, log in to your Google account, and download your details to the doctor's computer!

ByeBye PageRank on Toolbar?

Google are considering removing this much-moved component of the Google ToolBar. If they do, it could be enough to destroy Google!

Why? Well, it's the defacto score for determining the quality of a web site. People like to see it, SEOs and webmasters love it. If it goes, expect Ask, MSN or Yahoo to whack something similar into their toolbars, and instantly get an extra 1-5% marketshare, enough to create a snowball effect...

Google's New AdWords Algorithm - Money Grab?

The formula is a little hard for anyone other than AdWords experts to get their head around, but basically Google are changing the criteria for determining which ads appear above the search results. The consensus opinion suggests that Google is doing this purely to increase revenue. One analyst has portrayed the change with graphs, like the one above

Google Pulls Video Rentals & Sales

Just like Google Answers, the side of Google Video where consumers pay to own/rent commercial video offerings is closing down. Just like Google Answers, it probably made money, but not enough, and Google will want to use those staff elsewhere on other experiments.

I hope the future of the web doesn't involve too many short-term experiments - because people will tire of getting used to service only to find it closing down. This might be ok for one-trick ponies, but if Google pulls too many experiments, people will stop trying out the latest offerings....

More street-level views from Google Maps

Added are LA, Houston, Orlando, & San Diego.

The Google van has been patroling streets, monitoring the activities of citizens (oops, I mean taking photos of streets) as part of the mission to turn everything it can into stored and searchable information.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are already considering adding web cams to the mix...

Poor Reaction to Google News Comments

Google will start allowing people to post comments to stories appearing in Google News - but only if they are connected to the story, and this has been verified by Google. So if an article says Britney Spears is pregnant again, she could add a comment that she isn't, as long as Google have checked out that it really is her commenting.

Sounds a bit convoluted and pointless to me, but Google knows best. Two articles think it is silly too:

The Math of Page Rank

It's been done before, but here is the latest mathematical look at why some sites rank higher than others in Google. It seems to say that reciprocal links are a good thing, when combined with other linking patterns.

Otherwise, I am not able to comprehend most of the page - it has sentences like:
In other words, the vector I is an eigenvector of the matrix H with eigenvalue 1. We also call this a stationary vector of H.

Answers.com loses 28% of traffic overnight

This is an excellent example of not relying on Google for all your customers, because the Google rankings always change, and it could all disappear in a puff of smoke. And when you are a company like Answers.com that licenses its data from elsewhere, and similar data exists from other providers, you must accept that another site with similar data could turn up out of the blue and rank higher...

My 2-minute analysis is to sell ANSW.

Schmidt sells a few shares, gets $29 million

Eric E. Schmidt sold 57,100 shares of common stock under a prearranged trading plan, according to a SEC filing Tuesday.

He sold the shares on Friday for an average price of $510.08.

The stock sale was conducted under a prearranged 10b5-1 trading plan which allows a company insider to set up a program in advance for such transactions and proceed with them even if he or she comes into possession of material nonpublic information.
